Senior Year of College is Quickly Approaching

I can’t believe its almost here…my senior year of college (plus a summer semester, but hey I’m still a senior). So far it seems like it’s going to be a very busy year or at least a busy fall semester. If everything goes right I will have an internship, an undergrad apprenticeship and be an honors program mentor. I’m really looking forward to school and all the opportunities that lay ahead of me. Below is a brief description of everything I have going on for this school year.

  • Honors Program Mentor – I applied to be a mentor at the end of spring 2012 semester and was accepted for this position. Every year the Honors Program accepts incoming freshmen students into the program and invites them to move into Point Park a week early to do activities and events with the programs mentors that consist of upper class man. Each Mentor gets a group of mentee’s that they will meet with during the school year. After moving in early, the freshmen and mentors attend an orientation dinner where they will finally meet each other. The next few days are full of activities and events that help the students get familiar with the school, the Honors Program, the city and give them an opportunity to meet people and make friends. So far I have been able to get a hold of a few of my mentee’s via Facebook and have talked to them a little. I’m really excited to meet them all and help them with whatever they need.
  • Internship – Last school I worked with a non-profit group called Lending Hearts that works with children who have cancer. Lending Hearts hosts events and activities to provide cancer patients with recreational activities while being around peers who are going through the same thing. I developed a fundraiser for this group with the Honors Program for Valentine’s Day where we were able to raise $107 for Lending Hearts. Since then the president of Lending Hearts has become interested in working more with Point Park and plans on offering an internship for broadcasting, journalism and public relations students. I was notified right away about the internship and if all the paperwork goes through I should have landed the internship. I would be creating PSA’s about the program. I really hope that everything works out so I can get the spot. I have never had an internship before and it would greatly help me out.
  • Apprenticeship – The School of Communications offers apprenticeships to students. I’m hoping to get accepted as a U-View apprentice so I could work with the TV station doing all sorts of video production work. The apprenticeship requires a minimum of 10 hours per week and you get paid $2000 for the year which can either go towards your tuition or be split up into paychecks. All I have to do is turn in my cover letter, resume, and a DVD with some of my work and wait to hear back from the school.

On top of those three things, I have to keep my GPA up, remain on deans list and I have to keep my job at Dunkin Donuts because I can’t afford not to work. I also have to apply to Point Park for my masters degree and work on getting a graduate apprenticeship. My hands are defiantly going to be full if I acquire the internship and apprenticeship, but I’m up for the challenge.

Spring Semester Goals Recap

It’s that time again to evaluate how well I did with the spring semester goals I set down for myself. Here they are…

Spring Semester Goals

  1. Bring Up My GPA – I would like to get a higher GPA for this semester. Looks like I have a lot of hard work ahead of me. FAILED! I had a 3.55 GPA for fall 2011 but a 3.50 GPA for spring. I didn’t make my goal, but I cant really complain with making Deans list again.
  2. Publish At Least Five Articles – I hope to have at least five articles published in the school newspaper by the end of the semester. FAILED! I only had two articles published during spring semester.
  3. Make a Friend – I have acquaintances here, but no one I hang out with regularly or are on a personal level with. Now that I have met people I hope I can increase relationships and begin a good friendship. COMPLETED! I met a lot of really great people this past semester and started going out and doing things with people. This led me to having a great roommates next year that I can get along with.
  4. Make Exercise Apart of Daily Life – I never considered exercising a daily task ever in my entire life. But to lose the weight I have gained and become a healthier person overall, I would like to see myself go to the gym at least three times a week and not see it as a chore, but as something I can enjoy. FAILED! This was defiantly the hardest goal to complete seeing how I view going to the gym as a chore. I only went to the gym maybe five times last semester. I really suck at trying to like working out. Better luck next time!
  5. Be More Involved – College offers a lot of great events and opportunities for students. Taking advantage of that while I can will be time well spent. COMPLETED! I used the Honors Program at Point Park to my advantage and organized a fundraiser for Lending Hearts, an organization that provides children with cancer recreational and peer building activities. Next semester I am going to be an honors mentor which means I move into school early and mentor a group of freshmen honors students.
  6. Make Blogging a Habit – Last semester this blog kind of went downhill and I didn’t keep up with it. I plan on blogging at least twice a week to keep readers informed and interested. FAILED! I didn’t blog nearly as much as I did in spring semester as I did in fall, but my views went up a lot and I got more followers so it wasn’t a complete loss.
  7. Revamp My Personal Style – Something I have been working on and thinking on for awhile now. I want to get rid of the high school look and create a new mature and fashionable look for myself. I will post more on this later. WORK IN PROGRESS! I was able to go through most of my winter clothes and get rid of old ones and buy new ones, but now I’m doing the same thing for my summer clothes. I still need to stock up on more jewelery and accessories. I did buy a lot of new shows though!

I did a pretty terrible job at my goals this semester. It was a rough semester for me with everything that was going on in my life and going back to working full-time and trying to manage being in school full-time on top of that. But for having limited time and still making it on Deans list, I didn’t do too bad. Hopefully next semester will be even more of an improvement!

This is how finals and school make me feel.

Time Flys

It seems like it was just yesterday that I was starting school. Now were in the heart of the semester with midterms almost over and Thanksgiving break coming closer and closer. Its been awhile since I gave any reports on my progress at school or followed up with any of my previous posts. So here it goes …

Dunkin Donuts ROR or Donut Lady of Doom

We passed the ROR with a 95 percent. She docked us five points for a not thoroughly baked muffin. It was warm and all but the inside was a little gooey. Nothing I wouldn’t eat though.

The morning started off well with a handful of good employees and a normal slow Saturday. The inspection lady was sitting in the lobby with our regional manager.

Then out of nowhere 18 to 55 year old women started pouring in. The number of guests increased steadily until we had a line out the door and down the sidewalk. The busiest we’ve been since opening week. We later found out that there was an all women convention nearby. So the regional manager and inspection lady came in for back up to eliminate the female hostiles on the front line. The counter attack was done in a highly organized and prestigious manner and we eliminated the oncoming threat within two hours or less.

After that everything went back to normal and it was a boring long day of no phone or cell phones or popping a munchkin into my mouth when I got hungry.

I was rewarded for my courageous valor with a certificate of gratitude for my cheerfulness and continual smiling persona. I also received a wonderful pin that says “U Make it Dunkin”. I was pretty pumped about the pin.

Family Weekend

This past weekend was Family Weekend at Point Park. The plan was that my parents would come out on Saturday to tour around the city and visit the zoo and Carnegie Museum of Art and Natural History, we would go to dinner, hit up the student video showing, and then take a carriage ride through the downtown area at night. Travis would come out Friday night, spend the whole weekend with me, and be part of the weekend festivities.

The plans drastically changed before last Friday. Travis had to work Friday night and go to class Saturday morning. While I was letting my mom into my building I dropped my phone and bye bye screen so we had to find a Verizon store so I could get a brand new phone.

We decided to get me a phone after we had lunch at my favorite diner.  Mom forget her GPS and I had no black printer ink so we had to buy ink then print out directions which didn’t get used anyway because  because traffic was terrible and roads were blocked off because of the Occupy Pittsburgh protest. It took us an hour to get to the diner. It then took us two hours at the Verizon store to get this whole phone situation taking care of. I couldn’t get the phone I wanted so I got the newly released Samsung Stratosphere which so far has been a good phone.

Then we went to the Carnegie Museums knowing at this point we would never make it to the zoo. By the time we got our tickets Travis made it and we met up with him. We spent about two hours in the museum then headed to dinner at Bucca di Peppo.

When we go to Bucca the wait was an hour and a half so we walked down to the Hard Rock and ate there. By the time we got to eat we missed the student video showcase. Mom and dad decided to drop Travis and I off at the school after dinner so him and I could just take the carriage rides and then could go home. So we did just that.

Although nothing went right I had a really good time with my family and glad they came out to see me. It would be really great if they could come out more and see the city with me.

21st Birthday Party

My birthday is only five days away and I still have party decorations to make, cleaning, and other preparations. I have to wait till I get home to do them all though. So that gives me Friday night and all day Saturday to get everything ready. I wish I could say I was totally ex-tactic and highly anticipating the weekend but right now the only thing on my mind is school and everything I need to get done before I leave Friday morning. I just wish the weekend would hurry up and get here.

School

I GOT ACCEPTED INTO THE HONORS PROGRAM!!! Yep, that’s right, I finally made it in and completed one of the goals on my semester list. I seem to be doing well in most of my classes except Government. I have a feeling that I didn’t do well on the exam because I was so sick I didn’t prepare as well as I would have liked to. I still have no friend here. I have a few acquaintances and people I say hey to when I walk past them but I haven’t made a significant friend. I work all the time anyway so I don’t have the time to make them ha.

I do really like it here though. I actually enjoy studying and doing homework and going to class. Its not a drag like AiP. I strongly feel like I’m finally where I should be and that what I’m doing isn’t a joke. I’m so glad that I left AiP and I know I made the right decision. It’s a really great feeling to know that you like where you are in life and feel happy.

That wraps it up for now. Enjoy 🙂 Oh wait … I’m going to be uploading more photos to my flickr account once I get the off of moms camera so you should definitely check back for those!

Panic

So I’m about a week and a half into school and I’m already starting to freak out. Why? Because I feel like I don’t have time to do everything I want. Mostly that I don’t have time to myself and to relax. The first week was too much relaxation and now this week there is too little. I think I’m freaking out because I added my job into the mix. 27 hours a week plus 5 classes is a lot. Its not like everything is all at once, its two hours of free time here and there. I feel like with two hours I can’t get anything done. Between walking to classes or work, hygiene, eating, etc. it ends up being little time.

I think the big problem is my job. Thing is, I need the money. Yeah sure everyone needs money but I have to pay AiP money every month and buy groceries. After paying for books my bank accounts pretty much drained. Sigh. Eventually I’m going to have to drop down my hours at work when things at school start to heat up but for right now I can’t afford to cut them.

The only solution I see is putting on my super women costume and get the job done at no matter what cost. Time management is going to be the key to keeping everything in control. I guess somethings will have to put aside so the more important things can get done.

1 Down, 14 to Go.

Last Thursday I finished my first week of my Junior year. It wasn’t too hard or too devastating; it was rather boring and uneventful. So far I like all my classes. I don’t think I’ll have a hard time passing them as long as I stay on track. The most boring class is defiantly going to be Study of Government. The instructor is this older, monotone, no bullshit type man. My instructor tries to be funny but it doesn’t really work out well. The entire class is all lecture with three exams and one little paper. A very boring way to learn in my opinion but luckily I bought the book as a back up plan. The most exciting class thus far is Intro to Broadcasting. In my last post I said that was my favorite so far and it still is. In my Visual Communication Design class I have a totally crazy instructor. He’s a sarcastic smart ass whose really down to earth and chill. Even though its kind of a intro to Photoshop class (I’ve used Photoshop since high school  so I would like to be more challenged) I think I’m going to like it and I hope a learn something new.

I’m still on the fence about the social aspects of this school. I’m sure most of you have seen Mean Girls and when I say plastics you know what I’m talking about. For those of you who don’t plastics are girls that look like barbie dolls, dress way way to nice to sit in a lecture class, have this fake, stuck up accent (like OMG no way!), are usually skanky, think they’re better than everyone else, and are rich (or like to think they are). Half of this school is just that, plastics and plastic comes in male form too, but they are usually referred to as tools or douche bags. They come with large diamond studded earrings, fake tans, and huge muscles (cough* Jersey Shore knockoffs *cough). There is normal people here at this school, you just have to look for them. I talked to a few people and had a few people approach me but I haven’t made any “friends” yet.

The roommate situation here is going pretty well. I must say I am far more comfortable here with my living situation than I was at AiP. All of my roommates are still being totally nice and from time to time we sit down and watch TV or a movie together or order take out. The other night roomie 1 and I shared a little family history and talked on a deeper level. Which was really good to get in touch with people you live with. They aren’t messy and are very fair about cleaning and sharing space.

I’m working on my application essay for the honors program. I really really hope I can get in. I think my essay is pretty good so far and I hope to have it done by the end of this week. If I get in, I have to maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 and  3.5 GPA in all my honors courses. I really hope I can do that and don’t mess up. Being in this program is the biggest deal to me while being here and I don’t want to throw it away.

I had my first day back to work on Saturday and it felt good to be back. I got to bullshit with my manger and catch up. The store I work at opened last November and only three of the original employees is still there, myself included. I found out that my ex roommate got fired for not showing up and calling off work all the time which really didn’t surprise me but gave me a good chuckle. Were open on Sundays now which means I can work more hours. So far I have 29 hours this week starting tomorrow. That’s a lot of hours and if I start working on Sunday that will add another 6. Once school really picks up I’m sure I’ll have to give up a few hours but for now I really need that money to pay off loans and things. It’s all part of my plan which I’ll explain at a later time.

After this first week I really hope that everything works out. I hope I can stay focused and on task and get good grades. I want to make money and save up as much as I can. If I don’t get into the honors programs I’m going to cry (just kidding). Most of all I really hope I make friends here. Even if its just one friend, I just want to find someone I truly connect to.

Suite Pictures!

Just wanted to share some pictures of my suite at PPU. Its pretty nice. Once the other girls get here I’m hoping we can spice it up and decorate it more. I have to get a poster frame for my Sex and the City poster to hang up on the wall beside my bed. I got a new bed set this year seeing how I lost my old one and even though its more girly than I’m usually into I think it fits quite well with the room and the bathroom.
